What are Limiting Beliefs and how to Remove them
Limiting beliefs and blocks are negative or limiting beliefs which limit you in some way, shape or form. They prevent you from doing, having or achieving something you desire. Our beliefs govern our reality, from what we can do to what we can’t do, what is possible or impossible, as well as a plethora of many other intricacies we experience in life. Our beliefs are always shaping our reality, which is why having limiting beliefs can be so detrimental. They affect our lives in the background sometimes without us even knowing about it.
Have you ever tried to make progress on something, only to constantly come up short? Whether you’re struggling with health, wealth, or relationships. You put in the work, there shouldn’t be a conceivable reason why you are not getting to where you want to be, but never seem to get there. Chances are very good it’s a limiting belief, which is preventing you from achieving what you want.
Where do Limiting Beliefs come from?
Limiting beliefs are programmed in early developmental stages of childhood. They are programmed from our parents, and experiences of the outside world. Children’s brains are mostly in theta for the first few years of their lives, which being in theta their brains are primed to absorb information. As children grow they absorb information from their parents, siblings, and of the outside world to form the foundational programming which will be their operational system. All their thoughts, actions, habits and decisions will be guided by this program. This is why it’s so fundamentally important to be conscious of the things we teach our children, and of the things they experience.
Limiting beliefs can also be caused from a traumatic event, for example being if you’re in devastating car accident. This might cause you to develop a limiting belief around driving. They can also be caused by negative repetitive experiences in life. For example if a person keeps trying the same thing over and over without achieving a successful result, without learning, adapting or finding a different way to succeed, a limiting belief could be established. For example rather than learning new skills, a person may develop a limiting belief “I can’t do it”. From that point onwards it becomes even more difficult to achieve their goal. Because now they have programmed their brain to accept a limiting belief, so they will have that program working against them in the background.
What are the most Common Limiting Beliefs?
- Not believing
- Fear of failure
- Fear of success
- Fear of rejection
- Fear of not being good enough
- Fear of not being worthy enough
- Fear of not being loved and accepted
People can develop limiting beliefs about almost anything, and can have numerous limiting beliefs working against them at the same time. Some of the most common categories for limiting beliefs are personal, health, wealth and relationships. The earlier limiting beliefs are formed, the more deeply rooted limiting beliefs will be. The more deeply rooted a block is, the more significant amount of effort will be required to remove the limiting belief.
Limiting Beliefs Prevent People from
- Starting a business
- Getting a dream job, or advancing in a career
- Earning the money one deserves to earn
- Having the relationship one wants
- Owning a dream house
- Having the body and health one wants
- Travelling around the world and having the adventures one wants
Limiting beliefs can have a disastrous effect on a person’s life, preventing them from moving toward success and achieving success, preventing them from moving forward in life, and preventing them from living to their full potential.
There is nothing worse than doing everything right, from living healthy, eating healthy, working out, doing yoga, meditating, reading, learning, mastering new skills, taking action, putting in all the effort, time and energy, putting in the work, and not getting where you want to be.
There is nothing worse than being held back by your limiting beliefs.
Where are Limiting Beliefs Stored?
Limiting beliefs are stored in the subconscious mind, which is why so many people have such a difficult time trying to remove their limiting beliefs through a conscious program, such as affirmations. Our conscious minds can only process around 40 bits of information per second. Where as our subconscious mind can process up to 40 million bits of information per second. When a person learns to ride a bike, the person stores the programming in their subconscious mind. When a person rides a bike again, it’s autonomous. It would be extremely inefficient if we had to re-learn how to ride a bike again every time we wanted to ride a bike. The brain is specifically designed to be efficient.
How do I know what my Limiting Beliefs are?
The best way to determine what your blocks are, is to analyze your life and find recurring patterns. Perhaps you’re always struggling with money, and growing up your parents were always struggling with money. Perhaps you were always told money doesn’t grow on trees, which could have caused you to develop limiting beliefs around money. If you analyze your life thoroughly you will be able to pick up patterns in certain areas of your life where you are trying to make progress. There will usually be a limiting belief at work behind your lack of success in a certain area.
You can also do some deep internal work, and ask yourself these questions:
- What questions do you often ask yourself?
- What do you frequently tell yourself?
- What is your internal dialog?
The questions we ask ourselves often mirror our reality. If you’re constantly asking why can’t I make more money, chances are good you have a limiting belief around money. It’s also pretty easy to find out what your blocks are by analyzing your internal dialog. Look at the different things you regularly tell yourself, and the things you say to yourself in unfavorable situations. Perhaps you tell yourself you’re not good enough to get where you want, or achieve the success you want. Our internal dialog often leaves clues as to what our limiting beliefs may be.
Can You Remove Limiting Beliefs?
Absolutely, modern science and especially neuroscience has made significant advancements over the past decade. We now know our brains have something called neuroplasticity, which means we can create and effect change in our brains. We can create new programs in our brains, learn new things and master new skills. It’s all about creating neurons and neural pathways, and strengthening the neural pathways with repetition. This is the key to creating lasting change in our brains.
How do You Remove Your Blocks?
There are a number of ways in which you can remove your limiting beliefs.
Remove your blocks consciously
You can begin to remove your limiting beliefs consciously through repetition by using things like:
- NLP (neuro linguistic programming)
- affirmations
- mantras.
It will require a significant amount of effort, discipline, consistency and repetition to be able to create change through conscious processes but it is possible.
Removing your blocks subconsciously
It is far more effective to remove your limiting beliefs subconsciously, as opposed to consciously. Firstly you are going to the root where your limiting beliefs are stored. Secondly because you are using the power of your subconscious. The best methods include things like:
- Our incredible program which we focus on removing limiting beliefs subconsciously
- Subliminal programs
- Subliminal audios
- Hypnotherapy.
The Three most Important Questions to Ask Yourself
- What have your beliefs cost you in the past?
- What are your beliefs currently costing you?
- What will your beliefs cost you in the future?
” If you raise your standards but don’t really believe you can meet them, you’ve already sabotaged yourself. You won’t even try; you’ll be lacking the sense of certainty that allows you to tap the deepest capacity that’s within you… Our beliefs are like unquestioned commands, telling us how things are, what’s possible and impossible and what we can and can not do. They shape every action, every thought and every feeling that we experience. As a result, changing our belief systems is central to making any real and lasting change in our lives”
